Restore The Shore
APRIL 12, 2025 9:30 AM LAKE CHELAN CITY MARINA PARKING LOT
YOU CAN JUST SHOW UP OR YOU CAN SIGN UP – PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN REUSABLE GARBAGE BAG OR BUCKET
“Lake Chelan Restore the Shore” needs your help! Keep It Blue–Lake Chelan, the Lake Chelan Research Institute, and The Chelan Project from Chelan HS are teaming up for the 3rd annual community-wide beach cleanup for Lake Chelan on April 12, 2025. We also have support from Campbell’s Resort, the City of Chelan, Pilgrim Lake Services, Lake Chelan Valley Habitat for Humanity, and the 5 Gyres Institute!
Where to meet...
The main group will meet at the City Marina Parking Lot (between the drive-in and the go-carts across from Chelan Market). Meeting at the parking lot is optional, and you are more than welcome to go directly to your preferred cleanup site. Please “bring your own bag or bucket”, preferably reusable, because we want to minimize our environmental impact while we restore the beach. At the parking lot, students from The Chelan Project will be organizing groups to cover specific sections of beach. A certain number of canvas bags and 5-gallon buckets will be provided for people to use, but we ask that you please return them to us at the end of the cleanup.
If you are cleaning up a section of shoreline that is not highlighted on the map at the bottom of this page, please let us know the general location of where you picked up trash by texting Anna at 425-765-4449. This helps us create a comprehensive analysis of how much lakeshore was restored!
TrashBlitz...
This year, we will be utilizing an app called TrashBlitz created by the 5 Gyres Institute to create a log of all the trash that is collected. The app is free to download on Google Play or the App Store and can be found at https://www.5gyres.org/trashblitz. Please reference the instructional video below on how to use the TrashBlitz app. We will also provide paper copies of a form that people can use to log their trash in place of the app.
Because we want to make sure that we are documenting ALL the trash that is collected, there is also the option to drop off your collected trash at our office location. The address is 601 W. Wooden Ave and bins will be placed outside of the office for you to leave your collected trash in. For those individuals or groups who will not be near our office location, please contact Anna at 425-765-4449 and we will make arrangements to come pick up the trash at your collection location.
The main takeaway here is that we want a complete record of all the trash collected from the lake!
Collect Trash and Aquatic Weeds...
We ask participants to pick up all trash items AND fragments of aquatic weeds on the beach and surrounding areas. Each milfoil fragment can propagate into a new plant as the water level rises this Spring. Not only will you be preventing new milfoil growth, but you will also be reducing the total amount of organic carbon in the near-shore environment by removing invasive plants and other organic residue.
Take Photos of Algae....
Take Photos of Algae…
We also ask participants to photograph occurrences of attached green algae (periphyton) along the shoreline. This will help us map and track what happens to it as the water rises. Please text your photos to Phil Long at (509) 531-2987
Thank You Campbells...
Campbell’s is our major sponsor again is year. They will be providing coffee, cocoa, tea, and pastries from 11:30 to 12:30 in their Park Room, which is located on Woodin Avenue in Downtown Chelan.
Keep Track of Your Success...
Please either log your trash in TrashBlitz, use the paper logging forms, drop the trash off at our office location (601 W. Wooden Ave), or contact Anna at 425-765-4449.
If you are choosing to log the trash yourself, please take pictures of your haul and send them to Anna! We would also love to see any action shots of you and/or your group participating in Restore the Shore.

Stehekin TrashBlitz Cleanup…
LCRI/Keep It Blue employee Anna Galipeau was the awardee of the 5 Gyres’ TrashBlitz Ambassador Action Fund! The fund is intended to be used by the recipient to organize a TrashBlitz cleanup project on federal land. In Anna Galipeau’s application, she chose the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area in Stehekin as the intended site for her cleanup project. As such, LCRI would like to invite any interested volunteers to please join us on a trip uplake to complete the very first Restore the Shore Stehekin! Date to be determined. Alongside Anna and Phil, volunteers will be provided passage to Stehekin in addition to cleanup materials (bags/buckets). Volunteers will also receive some LCRI and 5 Gyres SWAG. Due to the remote nature of this project and limited funds, we are capping volunteers at 10. However, we invite any interested parties to join us for the cleanup! Additional volunteers will need to supply their own passage and trash collection materials.
